Candle holder, JOSEPH FRANK (1885—1967)
Candle holder “Slingan”, brass, for company Svenskt Tenn, Sweden, circa 1950-1960 Josef Frank (1885–1967) was an Austrian-born architect, designer, and theorist whose work reshaped the course of modern design. A co-founder of the Viennese modernist movement, he later settled in Sweden, where his long collaboration with Svenskt Tenn produced some of the most enduring textile and furniture designs of the 20th century. Frank rejected rigid functionalism in favor of a more humane modernism—one rooted in comfort, color, and organic form. His richly patterned textiles, generous furniture, and belief that design should support everyday life rather than dominate it remain profoundly influential, positioning him as a key figure in both Scandinavian design and international modernism.
