Bowl, Stig Lindberg (1916-1982)
Pedestal bowl with handle, faience (tin-glazed earthenware), hand-painted in ochre-yellow and manganese on a milky white ground. Gustavsberg Studio, Sweden, circa 1942–45. Underside inscribed “Stig L” and “Sweden”.
The work belongs to the early hand-painted faience production developed at Gustavsberg Studio under the artistic direction of Wilhelm Kåge, and closely relates to the breakthrough presentation Fajanser målade i vår (Faience Painted in Spring), held at Gustavsberg’s Stockholm showroom on Birger Jarlsgatan in 1942. This exhibition marked the emergence of Stig Lindberg’s painterly approach to faience, treating the glazed surface as a pictorial field and establishing a new expressive direction for Swedish studio ceramics.
